The Royal Marine Society is a small group of re-enactors which began in the late 1990's. We wish to show the role of the Royal Marines in Nelsons Navy, by on going research we hope to do this as accurately as possible. In 2007 we were asked by English heritage to expand our timescale by making uniforms from the late 18th century. This was for two events(Festival of history at Kelmarsh hall and Whitby). We were only too happy to help but with such a large period to choose from we decided rather than pick a specific uniform and time we created uniforms that gave a flavour of the period and the results can be seen in the web album.
We currently have eight members; these include a seargent, one corporal and six privates. We can always find a place for new members. We are always fundraising to enable the society to purchase new uniforms and equipment. The membership fee is only £15 a year to cover insurance costs. We have some spare kit to loan or we can help you to source your own.
( Interested in helping please go to the sponsor page.)
All our members are trained in the safe handling of their muskets, bayonets and black powder. We also have some members trained to man our two pounder cannon. All members must pass an annual weapons training course before using a weapon at a public event. Everyone is trained in foot drill and weapons handling of the period during closed season training sessions held at Owton Manor primary school,Hartlepool ,(you can never do enough drill).
As a society we have appeared in several documentries, these include; "Englands wooden walls " and " Seas warriors " as well as others. Five of our members took part in a photo shoot for a graphic novel entitled "The last coiners".Which was published in September 2006(see links page).
If you have an event that you would like us to attend,no matter how big or small just drop our secretary a line on HARTMARINES@aol.com and we will see you soon.
